  • 16/07/2010 - New LOSRA Initiative

  • 03/11/2009 - Michael Barker writes...

Gosport Half Marathon road race takes place at 10am Sunday 15th November 2009. Start is in Browndown Road (near roundabout by Bay House School). Approximately 1200 runners from all parts of the UK, including some of the best Club Runners in Hampshire will participate. It is a UK Athletics event. Runners of all abilities are encouraged to enter.

Within a few minutes of the start, the runners will turn into Cherque Way and head towards the junction of Broom Way, where they will turn right and enter the Daedalus site. All the runners will have cleared Cherque Way by 10.30am.

The route incorporates, Gosport Road, Stubbington Lane, Marine Parade (including the promenade), Portsmouth Road and finishes in Browndown Road.

At the start and also near the Hovercraft slipway in Marine Parade the Gosport 'Samba Band'  will be playing for the runners. These would be good locations to listen to the rhymes of Brazil and cheer on the runners. The runners would greatly appreciate your support. The leading runners are expected to finish in Browndown Road approx 11.08am

In conjunction with Gosport Leisure Services, we extend an invitation all local schoolchildren under 12 to take part in a 1.2k Fun Run. Registration is at Bay House School, Gomer Lane. Parental approval to participate will be required and the entry fee will be £2.00. All finishers receive a medal and a 'goody bag'. We want this to be an enjoyable experience, so if a child wants their parent/guardian to run with them, that is ok. No medal for parents! The Fun Run will commence at 10.20am and the route is through Stanley Park and finishes in Bay House School.

Giddy with schoolboy excitement, Dan sent me this:

Today Portsmouth Football Club announce plans to locate their state of the art Training Facilities to Cherque Farm, Lee-on-the-Solent.  We feel this is an excellent plan for the club and most importantly the community as it will deliver world class sports facilities to the children of gosport that no council could ever provide.  It will also expedite the opening of the Alver Valley country park.  We hope that all residents groups in Lee-on-the-Solent share our excitement and get behind the plans. We are confident that through proper dialogue any concerns and issues can be addressed .  We would urge any concerned residents to contact us at daniel@cherquefarm.com or post on the forum as we are trying to strike up a relationship with the club to answer residents concerns.

For more information please visit http://www.portsmouthfc.co.uk

Below are three documents that you can use as a template to show your support for the training facilities planned by PFC at Cherque Farm.  One is a word document that you can edit, the other two are Adobe Acrobat PDF files that allow you to simply print, amend and sign.  If you have any questions please let me know at daniel@cherquefarm.com

    Neighbourhood watch
    Mike Fellows writes:

"I am the Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for Glenney Close and a co-opted member of the Gosport Neighbourhood Watch Association. I set up the Glenney Close NWS Scheme nearly a year ago and am in the process of trying to interest other groups of houses on this estate to follow suit. To this end I have been leafleting various Closes and part of David Newberry Drive and had a strong response from those upon whom I have called. To date it seems likely that at least two new NW Schemes are nearing the inaugural meeting stage.
If there is anyone who wishes to know more about how to go about the setting up of a scheme for their own area I would be more than willing to give guidance and help. Please contact me in the first instance by e-mail mikefellows@clara.co.uk"

    DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE FOR LEE-ON-THE-SOLENT?
Lee-on-the-Solent could qualify for up to £240,000 development assistance under the £1.2 million Market Towns Initiative promoted by Hampshire Market Town Partnership and led by the Economic Development Office at Hampshire County Council.
Grant funding is available for projects aimed at improving services, generating new jobs, creating new businesses or enhancing learning opportunities to make a significant impact on the town's economy.
To access these new grants the town needs to prepare a comprehensive survey and analysis report on the town's economic, social, transport and environmental situation. This "Market Towns Health Check is the essential first step in developing an Action Plan for a range of projects. It gives residents the opportunity to influence local plans, have a say in the town's future and to represent the town's interests by speaking with one voice. It is an extremely important tool for providing evidence for funding applications, for example for a new community facility, transport or environmental improvements.
An interim work group has been formed who would like to hear from local people interested in helping with the execution and management of the necessary work and to hear from Lee residents and businesses their ideas for potential schemes to help the town.
A public meeting will be organised early in 2005 to formalise the working group and launch the Health check process. In the meantime, offers to help and requests for further information should be made to Bob Squirrell

    Megson Drive:
You may be wondering why the park on Megson Drive has always got the gates shut.  Having spoken to a Persimmon the reasons are logical!  Persimmon are not allowed to open the park to the public until the grass, trees and shrubs have had time to establish.  Experts from Gosport Borough Council regularly inspect the progress of the vegetation and as soon as they feel that it can cope with the impact of children and adults enjoying the facility they will grant Persimmon access to open.  As plants take different times to establish, they are unable to provide estimates of when it may be open.  Finally, once open Persimmon will be adding a play area for Children!  Watch this space for more news.
